Understanding DNS Record Types

A quick reference to every record type our tool supports

A Address Record (IPv4)

Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address. The most fundamental DNS record, used to point your domain to a web server.

AAAA IPv6 Address Record

Maps a domain name to an IPv6 address. Used for modern dual-stack internet connectivity alongside A records.

MX Mail Exchange Record

Specifies the mail servers responsible for receiving email on behalf of your domain. Priority values determine server order.

NS Nameserver Record

Identifies the authoritative DNS servers for your domain. These are set at your domain registrar and control all DNS resolution.

TXT Text Record

Stores arbitrary text. Used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC email authentication, domain ownership verification, and service configurations.

CNAME Canonical Name Record

Creates an alias from one domain name to another. Commonly used for www subdomains, CDN configurations, or service endpoints.

DNS Lookup FAQs

Answers to common DNS record lookup questions

  • What is a DNS records lookup?

A DNS records lookup queries authoritative DNS servers to retrieve all configuration records associated with a domain. This includes IP addresses, mail servers, nameservers, SPF records, SSL CAA records and more.

  • Why are some record types empty?

Not every domain uses every record type. For example, a domain without IPv6 won't have AAAA records, and a domain using a CDN may not have a direct SRV record. Empty results simply mean that record type hasn't been configured.

  • How is this different from a DNS propagation check?

DNS Records Lookup shows you what records exist for a domain from one authoritative resolver. DNS Propagation Check shows whether your changes have spread to DNS servers worldwide. Use both together for a complete picture.

  • What does TTL mean in DNS records?

TTL (Time To Live) is the number of seconds a DNS resolver should cache a record before requesting a fresh copy. Shorter TTLs mean faster propagation of changes; longer TTLs reduce DNS query load.

  • Can I look up records for a subdomain?

Yes! You can enter any fully qualified subdomain like mail.example.com, www.example.com or api.example.com. Each subdomain has its own independent set of DNS records.

  • Is this tool free?

Absolutely. SkyCore Host's DNS Records Lookup is completely free with no registration, no rate limits, and no ads. Use it as often as you need for any domain.
